How To Enable Guest Posts

How to Set Up Guest Posts in WordPress

Starting a blog is a great way to build passive income that can help accelerate your financial independence journey! You can think of each blog post as a little business that you put out on the internet that has the potential to find leads and generate income for you in perpetuity.

Guest posting is a great way to drive traffic to your blog while building back-links which improves your website domain authority. Ultimately, it is your domain authority that will help you to rank well in google and other search engines. Higher domain authority will result in more traffic which equates translates to profitability.

To do this, you will want to set users up as Contributors to your site. To get started, you will need the following from the author:

  1. First and Last name
  2. WordPress Email address
  3. (Optional) A short bio
  4. (Optional) Social media links

How to Add a Contributor

In this section you will add your guest author as a new user to your site. They will be limited to accessing their own post and will not be able to publish without your review and explicit permission. For more details on their access see below:

Click here for an explanation of their permissions:

In WordPress, Go to Users:

Go to Add New:

Enter Details and then click the blue ‘Add New User’ button:

If you are adding this user simply as a means to distinguish your posts from theirs on your site and do not want to send them login credentials you can un-check the “Send the new user an email about their account.” This is also a hack that will allow you to set up a bio box for your guest author without providing them login-credentials.

To add a fancy author box, do the following:

How to Add A Fancy Author Box

I’ll show you how to configure wordpress to automatically add a author box, similar to the one show below, to the bottom of your posts and pages:

Go to Plugins

Click Add New

Search for ‘Fancier Author Box’, select the one by ThematoSoup then click the blue Activate button

Go to Settings > Fancier Author Box

Choose how you want the Author Box to show up

How to Update A User’s Profile

In this section, I will show you how to update a user’s profile so the Fancy Author box shows their bio and social links properly.

Got to Users:

Click to Edit the User’s Profile

Update the ‘Contact Info’ and the ‘Fancier Author Box’ sections accordingly including social links and Bio info:

Most Bloggers will have a gravatar profile so their profile photo should pull over automatically.

For this to work, you will need to use the same email address they use to log in and edit their blog or have set up in gravatar.

That’s it, wordpress should automatically do the rest! If you found this helpful or have any questions, let me know in the comments below.

Monetizing Your Blog

If you are like me, the ultimate goal for your blog is to help others and to help fund and support your target lifestyle. A common way to monetize your blog is by sharing affiliate links to products and services that you use and wholeheartedly endorse. For Mrs LifeOnFIRE and I, one of those product areas is Travel Rewards. This past year we earned $15,000 in travel rewards. We spent $13,000 worth of points on a big trip to Europe and to visit family in the Northwest U.S.

If free travel would help you in your personal finance journey, I invite you to check out our Travel for Free page and recent post explaining how we improved our credit to get into Travel Rewards and how our credit score has since grown to 771 because of travel rewards!
